Imported vehicles have one particularity: they must be insured before they are driven in Portugal, and there are usually two policies — one on the foreign plates while the legalization process is under way, and another on the Portuguese plates once they are assigned. What we need from you
- Your name, email and phone number, and your tax number (NIF) if you want the quote in your name straight away.
- The license plate, if the vehicle is already registered in Portugal.
- Vehicle document: the Single Vehicle Document (DUA) or, while the vehicle does not yet have Portuguese plates, the Vehicle Customs Declaration (DAV).
- The main driver's driver's license.
- If you already have insurance, your current policy or green card helps us compare terms.

- Can I insure the car before it has Portuguese plates?
- Yes. You can take out insurance on the foreign plates so the vehicle can be driven while the process is under way. Once the Portuguese plates are assigned, a new policy is taken out on those plates. In the request, if the vehicle is not yet registered in Portugal, leave the license plate field blank.
- What documents should I attach to the insurance request?
- Two documents are needed: the Single Vehicle Document (DUA) or, while the vehicle does not yet have Portuguese plates, the Vehicle Customs Declaration (DAV); and the main driver's license. If you already have insurance, your current policy or green card helps us compare terms.
- Is there any cost or commitment for a quote request?
- No. The request is free and with no commitment: we look at your case, check terms with our partners and send you the quote. The decision to go ahead is always yours.
- Do you handle insurance and legalization at the same time?
