Why check the VIN before you buy
The VIN, or chassis number, is the 17-character code that uniquely identifies each vehicle. From it you can piece together the car's past in several countries and check whether what the seller says matches what is on record. It is especially useful for an imported car, whose history was built outside Portugal.
What the report can reveal
- Real mileage and successive odometer records, which expose rolled-back odometers.
- Recorded accidents and damage, with their severity and, where available, earlier photos.
- Number of previous owners and the countries where the vehicle was registered.
- Theft records and outstanding issues, such as liens.
The report is issued by carVertical, a ComfyLand partner. Once you have checked the vehicle, we handle the legalization in Portugal — and, if needed, the Certificate of Conformity (COC).
VIN check FAQs
See the frequently asked questions
- What is a car's VIN and where do I find it?
- The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), or chassis number, is the 17-character code that uniquely identifies each vehicle. It is on the car's registration document and, on the vehicle itself, usually at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on the door pillar or in the engine compartment. It does not use the letters I, O or Q.
- What does the vehicle history report show?
- Real mileage and odometer records, accident and damage history, the number of previous owners, theft records, liens and earlier photos of the vehicle.
- Is it worth checking the VIN before importing a car?
- Yes. It is the simplest way to confirm that the mileage shown is real and that the car has no serious accidents or outstanding issues on record, before you pay and start the import and legalization process.
- Who issues the report?
- The report is issued by carVertical, ComfyLand's partner in this area. You order it on the carVertical website, where you can use the discount code shown on this page.
