What a COC (Certificate of Conformity) is and how to get one

The document that bridges the model's European type approval and the national type approval — and that determines your ISV.

Updated on .Source:Applying for license plates for an imported vehicle (gov.pt / IMT, in Portuguese).

What it is

The COC (Certificate of Conformity) is issued by the manufacturer and certifies that the vehicle matches a model type-approved in the European Union. It contains the approved technical specifications — CO₂ emissions, engine size, weight and dimensions — and the emissions test standard, WLTP or NEDC.

What it is used for in the legalization

  • It is the basis for type approval in Portugal: the IMT converts the model's European type approval into a national one from it.
  • It is the basis for calculating the ISV, because it states the CO₂ emissions and the engine size — and the standard, which determines which table applies.
  • Without national type approval, the IMT fee rises from €45 to €165.

How to get it

It may come with the car, if the seller has it. If not, you order it from the manufacturer or a specialized service. At ComfyLand you order it on the COC page, through our partner COC Online: all you need is the chassis number (VIN), and it covers European makes.

I already have the COC

Attach it to the legalization request. The team checks that it is complete and suitable for the process. Before you buy, it is also a good idea to check the car's history by VIN — see the VIN check.
